Vidarbha and Marathwada in Maharashtra are inhabited by Gonds. The Gond tribe is one of the major tribes in Maharashtra. Formerly Gondwana was an independent region and the Gond kingdom was in this place. the Gond tribe is settled in the eastern districts namely Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Yavatmal and Nagpur. This tribe has preserved its language, customs and traditions even today. Since this tribe lives in dense forest, their deity dance tradition culture depends on nature deities. The same effect is seen in their dance. In Gondi society, there are many types of Dhemsa dance, Rela dance, of which Dhemsa is the main dance.

Dhemsa dances are performed by the people of Gond tribe for wedding ceremonies and to entertain themselves. Dhemsa is a Gondi word. Which is called special dance. They do this in a rhythmic and distinctive style while dancing. This dance is called Dhemsa as it is round. The special feature of Dhemsa dance is that men and women dance together and forget all the sorrows and dance unconsciously. Different exercises are done in it. Some men perform, some women perform. About 30 to 35 artists participate in this dance

Costumes

In this dance, women and girls wear clothes, blouses, braids of flowers on their hair with peacock feathers on them. Traditional ornaments are worn around the neck and curly garlands are tied around the feet. The nose has a nostril. All women dress the same, only the jewelry is different. Men's attire includes a dhoti around the waist, a bundi on the hands, a yellow rag on the deck, with leaves in it, various necklaces around the neck, and curls tied around the legs. This costume helps them to have a different contract while dancing. On that occasion, everyone is engrossed in this dance and enjoys it.

Dhol, Saini, Jangadi. Turbudi are played in this dance. All these instruments are traditionally composed by the tribals and they themselves play in a rhythmic manner. Other people have no place in tribal dance. All the artists belong to the same tribe. They perform dances in the traditional way.
