Alu Kurumba Paintings, tamil nadu

Alu Kurumbas are wonderful artisans and traditionally take rocks and use them for their canvases to create paintings with natural dyes or pigments. The subjects of these painted artworks are nature, daily life, and spiritual beliefs, which again illustrate their close association with the forest. They also traditionally have a rich oral tradition and are diligent about their folk songs, myths, and stories that are passed from generation to generation. Music is significant to their community and plays a vital function in Alu Kurumba culture. The use of instruments like the Peeka (blower), Arkol and Jalara (wind instruments) at rituals and gatherings are important examples of their expressive culture. Music enables Alu Kurumba community members to express and reinforce community bonds, maintain cultural identity, and help pass down their social and cultural importance to the next generation of Alu Kurumba.
