YAKTARO

The Yaktaro, or Eik Tara, is a single-stringed instrument used particularly by the Gujjars of Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining areas. This instrument forms an important part of Sufiyana Gojri poetry, which is highly emotive folk music strongly embedded in the culture of the Gujjars. The clear and strong sound of the Yaktaro elevates the qualities of poetry and spirituality in the lyrics while adding richness to the oral tradition of the community's storytelling.

Gujjar

The Gujjar tribe is a nomadic pastoral community located primarily in the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and other northern regions of India. The life of these people is almost entirely contingent upon animals, especially cattle, and music plays a vital role in any social or cultural event. Yaktaro, amongst their musical culture, showcase the tribe's ardent association with its traditions and with the land, and their works symbolize the daily life of the Gujjars along with the religious ethos."

Eik

The Yaktaro is made of wood and has one string, which is usually metallic or made of some other long-lasting material. The design of the instrument is minimal but effective, with wood constituting the body of the instrument. The string is tuned over the frame, and on being plucked or strummed, gives a clear tone that serves as the foundation for the Sufiyana Gojri music. The Yaktaro's minimalist design showcases the utilitarian requirements of the Gujjar community, which tends to migrate frequently.

A

Yaktaro is generally played only for traditional performances of Sufiyana Gojri poetry. It is performed in small ensembles, which include the poetry recitation by the accompaniment of Yaktaro played in the private gatherings or ceremonies, typically attended by community groups or during religious events. Since the instrument itself is so straightforward, it pairs well with the poetic lyricism, making for a haunting performance. Yaktaro is even played for the individual performances done by the artists of the tribe, both recreationally and in order to carry on their cultural heritage.

Yaktaro

Ancient outfit Yaktaro holds tremendous cultural importance for the Gujjar tribe since it is played to recite Sufiyana Gojri poetry which captures the poetic and spiritual voice of the tribe. Its purpose has remained both entertainment and a means to protect their language, folklore, and traditions. In all, Yaktaro plays an important role in the cultural identity preservation of the Gujjars with additional threats to such traditional practices arising from modern times.
