Traditional Instruments of Thongseng, andhra pradesh

Tudum

The Tudum is a kettle-shaped drum with a stretched membrane, producing deep resonating beats that provide the foundational rhythm for Thongseng dances. It is typically played by male musicians and is essential during key moments like transitions in step or ritual invocations. Its thunder-like sound reflects both the heartbeat of the dance and the natural sounds of the forest and hills. The Tudum sets the energy level and pace of the performance and amplifies its ceremonial atmosphere.

Goh

This instrument is a bamboo-stem fiddle with a resonator made from half a coconut shell. Its unique sound mimics the gentle tones of wind and water, adding a lyrical layer to the performance. The Goh Goh Inz Deb complements both vocal and dance components with its delicate, almost haunting melody. It enhances the emotional depth of rituals like ancestor worship and spiritual ceremonies, reflecting the tribe’s harmony with natural elements through music.

Konda

Gangalam are brass cymbals that produce a bright, clashing sound used to accentuate rhythm and changes in choreography. These are played during both festive and solemn Thongseng performances. Their sharp tones cut through the layers of drums and help signal movement shifts to dancers. The instrument adds ceremonial intensity and festivity, symbolizing both celebration and divine presence. It contributes to the sacred energy of the dance, especially during protective and celebratory rituals.

Konda

The Drih Goi Daanz is a bamboo scraper instrument that creates a rhythmic, rasping sound. It provides a textural soundscape and complements the percussive elements of Thongseng music. Played with a stick or hand, it mimics natural sounds such as insects or rustling leaves. This instrument deepens the ecological resonance of the performance, reflecting the tribe’s intimate relationship with their forest environment. It’s mostly used in slower-paced dances like Jumbong or Guaren Thongseng.

Thongseng

This is a slit bamboo percussion instrument that creates sharp, woody clapping sounds when struck. It serves as a traditional tribal metronome, helping dancers maintain rhythm in sequences that involve group synchrony and formation changes. It’s portable, easy to use, and vital in performances involving children or large groups. Tanarjub Daanz reflects the use of locally available materials in Savara musical traditions and enhances the cultural authenticity of the Thongseng dance experience.
