PAVRI

Konkna tribe is a tribe residing in Maharashtra state and on the border of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat states. Konkana tribe people reside in Dhule, Nandurbar district of Satpuda mountain hills region then on the foot of Sahyadri also, Nashik district and Palghar, Thane districts in Konkan division. Pavari is performed on any festival with accompaniment by Sambal, Dholki and men and women sit together to maintain the rhythm and dance the whole night through.

Pawari is the principal instrument played during the Dongrya dev festival from the full moon of the month of Paush to the month of Margasish these are Marathi calendar months. Dongrya dev festival is accorded special significance in the tribal culture. During the festival of Dongrya Dev, the tribal god, ghosts dance to the pavri septsuras.

Pavari is a special instrument used in the Konkana tribe. Pavari is a stringed instrument that consists of dried gourd, bamboo, palm leaf and wax. Saptasuras are produced by blowing air with the mouth in Pawari. Because of this characteristic, the significance of Pavari has extended beyond oceans. Konkana men perform this dance by donning traditional attire like dhoti, kopri, pagote for head, ghugru on feet and Lugde and Phadki for women.
