Sal

For Karbi men and women, Sal is a thick colorful fabric that is dawned in winter. It has broad red woolen stripes fighting against a narrow one of black. In the center is the Jambeli Athon motif, an honoured symbol for the Karbis, which is woven from multi-coloured yarn, thereby imparting tremendous traditional value to it. The Sal is basically a winter wrap worn on the shoulders of the Karbi people to keep them warm and cozy. Wool is used for combating chilling winds, while its bright and vibrant decorative style can illuminate any dull winter day. Wool and the traditional technique of weaving render it one winter wear that is functional as well as a cultural expression in an eye-catching way. Unlike many traditional textiles, Sal is worn by both Karbi men and women. Because of its versatility and durability, Sal is an important garment for the community. Red and black stripes and the sacred Jambeli Athon motif ensure its importance as a cultural artefact for both genders.

Jambeli

Jambeli Athon Motif represents the profile in center of the Sal fabric, woven with accustomed Karbi sacred symbols. This is a design of tribal heritage. They carry cultural and religious understanding of the people's beliefs and legacy from the tribe. The drawing is painstakingly multicolour embroidered, thus giving it prominence over Sal bound by primarily red and black striped surfaces. Sal has broad red stripes interspersed by narrow black stripes, thus resulting in sharp contrasts clearly distinct and visible from the widths. In typical Karbi textiles, this color invokes warmth and strength. These lines are woven with certain fineness in the fabric such that it becomes very much resistant to corrosion, and thus, is a good reflection of the sophisticated craftsmanship by the tribe.

Choi

The sleeveless black jacket is known as Choi Hongthar among Karbis. It bears white stitching on the side. The opening design consists of two openings for arms. The center has three short strips of multi-coloured geometrical designs and the lower part has five horizontal strips. The long hanging fringes enhance the ethnic appeal of the jacket.
