ANGAMI NAGA DANCE Attire, nagaland

Angami

Melo Phita is an important traditional dance of the Angami tribe in Nagaland. This dance is performed during the Sekrenyi festival in February and forms an expression of the colorful cultural heritage of the tribe. Melo Phita serves to bring the people together, binding them in unity and reverence for nature and the warrior spirit of the tribe. This is also a means of passing on history and tradition and sharing with the younger generations the cultural pride represented by this unique expression of rhythm and movement.

Angami

The angami tribe, mostly settled in Khonoma Village in Nagaland, is one of the most important tribes among the Naga people. The angamis, who are eminent historians in Nagaland, pride themselves in being self-sufficient, agriculturists, and warriors. The tribe holds community rituals dear to them, which are celebrated through events like the sekrenyi festival. The angamis are known to hold nature in high esteem, so they safeguard their heritage by way of such festivals and cultural practices.

Costume

Angami men's traditional dress comprises colorful clothes combined with intricately designed headgear furnished with fur and colorful feathers. Women accompany such dresses with bead necklaces and feather ornaments to signify tribal identity and social status. These costumes are not merely ornamental but represent the surroundings of the tribe and its heritage. When worn by dancers, they serve to differentiate one dancer's attire from another while also providing aesthetic beauty and authenticity in the ceremonial dance.

Angami

The musical accompaniment of the melo phita is quite rhythmically pronounced as songs are sung in tandem by both men and women. These are songs that have been bequeathed from generation to generation: they give life to the very act of dancing, and the tempo ebbs and flows to guide the dancers through patterned formations, creating a positive rhythm that can enchant audiences. The vocal harmonies are celebrative and spiritual, emphasizing togetherness and the tradition of all to the common spirit of angami tribe at the festival.

Angami

This is a dance type accompanied by drum music, the main instrument employed in melo phita dance, which serves to introduce the rhythm and pace for the dancers. In a steady and ringing manner, its beat carries a dance along its motions. Structured formations are enhanced through the drum as it provides a sound unifying echoing throughout the gathering. The drum will help maintain the disciplined pace of toil.
