Carrying Bamboo Basket, arunachal pradesh

The Lower Siang District in Arunachal Pradesh's Adi tribe creates durable bamboo baskets for transportation of heavy goods. They are essential to day-to-day living and have a form suited to easy usage in hilly country. The making and the structure of the baskets portray the creative resourcefulness of the Adi, while at the same time being eco-friendly and possessing consciousness values toward nature and artisan skills with traditional craftsman values employing bamboo as a renewable source.

One of the largest tribes of Arunachal Pradesh, Adis are a highly cultured society that has an in-depth affinity towards nature. Before they settled down to undertake agriculture and bamboo works, the Adis turned into nature-worshippers in their Donyi-Polo religion. Master of their skill in the craft of basketry as well as the other crafts, their expression of their devotion to harmony with nature is a gift that has come down to them from their past.

Crafted from bamboo that is harvested, stripped, and woven, the Adi carry basket is quite a specialty in itself. Bamboo, thus, is chosen for its strength, flexibility, and ready availability in the region. The cane is sometimes added, in addition, for strength and good looks. This eco-friendly method ensures that the baskets are made sturdy yet lightweight to carry heavy loads through rough terrain.

Adi baskets are constructed for heavy loads such as firewood or produce. They have cane or bamboo straps to carry the basket on the back, leaving the hands free. This functional design supports the agricultural lifestyle of the Adis, giving them the ability to move easily with load across mountainous terrains.

These baskets signify culture for the Adi people. They speak about sustainability and craftsmanship. These are more than practicalities. They express the Adi respect for nature, their resourcefulness, and cultural heritage- Respect for Mother Earth also signifies not only practical baskets but also conceptual ones-from one generation to another, basket weaving becomes an inherited skill that strengthens ties in the community and becomes part of the identity of the Adis themselves, thereby letting them preserve traditions that include their way of life.
