Malati Murmu , odisha

As an inspiring Santhal tribal woman belonging to Mayurbhanj district, Malati Murmu is worth noting. She actively works toward the preservation of her native Santhali language and has thus become the editor and publisher of Fagun, the only newspaper written in the Santhali language in India. Thus, she provides the opportunity for Santhalis to experience their heritage. Above all, her commitment to culture reflects the value of her roots and the very purpose of strengthening the linguistic and cultural identity of her community.

As the editor and publisher of Fagun, Malati Murmu is the first woman to emerge in India as an editor and publisher for indigenous communities. This newspaper is a rare example of tribal journalism, informing the public about news and culture in Santhali. Against all limiting resources, Murmu somehow managed to start Fagun with the support of many prominent members from the community, and its readers increased from 500 in number to 5,000 across the nation. Through this avenue, she emerged as an important voice for the Santhal people, creating awareness as well as solidarity in the community.

Malati Murmu was born and brought up in Mayurbhanj, Odisha, where she has completed her matriculation in Santhali. Inspired by the state recognition awarded to her language, she thought about starting a Santhali newspaper to celebrate and preserve the identity of her community. Lack of finances made Murmu's dream difficult to achieve, but her determination and the support of the community turned Fagun into reality. Her journey represents the very spirit of perseverance as she ascended to a cultural platform that continues to grow while crossing financial hurdles to reach into the hearts of Santhali speakers across the country.
