short description
Khond tribe broad short neck clay pot is an earthenware traditional vessel mainly used in cooking rice, which forms the staple diet for the people of this tribe. The Khonds are the second most prominent indigenous tribes among the people of the state Odisha, famous for the close relationship they maintain with nature and for their knowledge in harnessing natural resources for their daily requirements. Pottery plays an important part in the domestic as well as cultural life of the Khonds. This pot is broadly spherical in form with a round wide mouth and a short neck to make it apt for boiling and cooking over open fires. Its widely opened mouth enables easy access and some stirring of contents whatsoever during the entire cooking process. The pot is made from locally available clay and is shaped with the hand, fired in traditional kilns or open flame, inherited through generations. Its make quality achieves both functional and speaks volumes regarding their knowledge of material behavior and thermal efficiency by the Khond tribe. Spherical bodied, ensuring even distribution of heat, coupled with the earthen material, ensures that retained warmth makes the cooked rice soft and cozy for a very long time. Such pots are mostly made by tribal women, who are the actual custodians of pottery traditions in the community. These vessels do not only do kitchen work but also form a part of the culture of the tribe, using these for festivals, communal feasts, and rituals all.
