These rectangular stone pots with a hard bottom are very much traditional craft items by the different Santals inhabiting different parts of Odisha. This is stone-carving work which is reckoned prestigious, as it signifies an intimate ethno-cultural living relationship enjoyed by people with nature and environment. Such pot contains the dual utility of containerization and beautification to house the artistic heritage of tribes.
Carved on the surface of the pot are representations of the lotus, which indicate purity, beauty, and spiritual enlightenment. This flower is considered by several indigenous cultures, including the Santal tribe, as life and renewal symbols and, thus, is important in culture and spirituality. The quality of lotus engraving on stone surfaces also seems to be quite good, demonstrating the exquisite craftsmanship of Santals, who are believed to be wielding a lot of power in terms of chiseling stones into metaphorically loaded designs. The pot stands securely on its flat bottom base all the while directing it to a guaranteed hold under which it is going to stand. That makes this very useful such that this pot is not just a practical object to keep things but also an article of everyday decorative usage. It has a perfect rectangular groove cut on top, either a functional or ornamental one, complementing the work aesthetic. This rectangular stone pot is evidence and features the Santal ability to fuse utility with decoration, and will thus serve as a wonderful prototype of their cultural heritage and traditional skill in Odisha.
