description
This conical helmet is a dazzling piece of traditional war attire, made by the Naga tribe. It is intricately made out of fine plaited cane strips. With an oval base, and being woven completely inside and out, the helmet displays both expert craftsmanship and functional design ingrained in tribal tradition.
Its decorative elements are, however, the real feature of this particular item. The top of the helmet is adorned by a pompous plume of red and black animal hair, said to represent power, bravery, and status within the tribe. These tufts of hair are attached to a curved cane strip running from the crown of the helmet down to both sides, extending to its lower edges. It not only enhances aesthetic qualities of the helmet but could even indicate warrior's preparedness and tribal identity. Once upon a time, such helmets were worn during ceremonial dances, warrior rituals, and occasions among communities, usually as indicators of one having rank or valor. The most important things that can be said about it are cane, the strongest, lightest, and readily available material from the locality. This ensures durability, yet comfort at the same time.
