A wooden breastplate with cane strips
description
This kind of decorated wooden breastplate is a ceremonial ornament worn by the members of the Naga tribe of Nagaland. It is carved neatly out of wood with a widening design at the two ends and a narrow middle, which rests comfortably across the owner's chest.
The wonderful dorsal decoration that somehow makes this breastplate appealing and culturally rich includes the harmonious combination of plaited cane strips, orchid skin, cowrie shells, and dried hair. Each material signifies something: Cowrie shells generally denote prosperity and status; Cane strips symbolize craftsmanship; Orchid skin signifies connection with nature. Cotton strings are tied on the back with which it is secured across the chest. The breastplate is usually worn for festive occasions, dances of war, or ceremonies and is symbolic of either warriorhood, social standing, or tribal pride.
