This uniquely designed oblong-shaped cap is a sample of the craftsmanship and culture of the Naga tribe in Nagaland. The structural foundation of the cap is made of finely split bamboo strips, a long-realized basketry inherited from generations before. The weaving on the inside is so complex, diamond-shaped gaps are made to allow ventilation while holding everything within its strong base.
The outer surface is covered by black hairy animal skin; it gives a rugged, earthy touch to the entire shape. Natural hides would hence not only add to the utility of this cap but also have symbolic and decorative value, often pertaining to tribal status, warrior identity, or spiritual belief. At the crown of the cap, some circular-shaped cotton piece is tied, possibly serving, simultaneously, as ornamentation and symbolic object of focus. The interplay of texture-animal skin, bamboo, and cotton-indicates the society's understanding of its surroundings and the way in which it manipulates utility to tell cultural stories.
