Cylindrical bamboo vessel is a traditional crafts item made by the Mizo, a tribe that has settled in the northeastern part of India, mainly in the state of Mizoram. The Mizo tribe is said to have very rich cultural heritage and features very close harmony with nature. Being rich and inexpensive, bamboo symbolizes most Mizo people in their daily lives. The vessel has been skillfully cut and cleaned and treated to increase durability and hygiene. Its shape and design are reflections of both the ingenuity and environmental knowledge of the Mizo artisans. Traditionally, this bamboo vessel is meant to hold or carry liquids, whether water, rice beer (zu), or any other household liquid. With one side closed, it ensures that the contents stay safe and the smooth, natural interior of the bamboo keeps the liquids cool and untainted. The cylindrical form allows easy carrying, if not stacking, when required. These types of vessels are still in use in rural Mizo communities and represent the very spirit of self-sufficiency, skill in its making, and eco-friendly living. In museums such as Indian Museum, Kolkata, items like these are preserved and displayed as real objects of Mizo cultural heritage, giving insight into their daily lives, customs, and respect for nature.
