description
This kind of belt is a most traditional and marvelous exhibition of tribal cane craftsmanship by the state Abor tribe living in Arunachal Pradesh. It must be a long belt and becomes finely woven with cane strips showing a high level of skill and attention to detail, typical of the Abor artisanal heritage.
The most distinguishing feature of this belt is its specially strengthened edges on both margins made up of koon, that is, plaited spaced cane strips. This gives a lot to the durability and firmness of the belt but shows that the community is great at merging form with function. The weaving is tight and regularized, indicating that the belt could have been for practical uses like securing clothing or tools, or during rituals and ceremonial occasions. Cane is collected every year from local forests and is appreciated for its strength and flexibility and for its sustainability. Sophisticated use of plaiting techniques along the margins added to the complexity and perspective of the community regarding materials.
