description
This traditional cane hat is a unique headgear of the Mishmi tribe, native to Arunachal Pradesh . The hat is handmade by plaiting strips of cane, revealing the works of the community in cane craft, which is indispensable in all daily lives and expressionism in culture. The style of hat is oval on top and round at the base, a unique fusion of comfort and aesthetics.
The outer surface is decorated with elaborate designs from very finely arranged cane strips. The bare inside surface provides elegance in this hat just as it does in a number of Mishmi hats, whereby the aesthetics of the fit contribute to the snug ambience of the wearer's head. The circular base is reinforced by a stout rim of cane. Symbolically and functionally, this hat counts as an integral part of Mishmi attire used for ritual and everyday purposes. It embodies a practical solution to the problems posed by the hilly terrain and climatic conditions while simultaneously standing as a symbol of tribal identity and skill.
