description
The Bamboo container is an extremely neat and extremely fine hand-made traditional utility, which has been made by the indigenous community called Khiamungan Naga, who live besides the east part of Nagaland-located next to the India-Myanmar. This is a cylindrical hollow bamboo container that uses the ingenuity of the Tribe by using some available natural material to fashion practical tools for real life. Mainly, this bamboo container is used for carrying and storing salt-which considered a useful and precious commodity in the traditional Naga households. The bamboo is naturally divided, has node at the base which acts as a closed bottom.
The lid is fitted at the end so that the top of the container has long thin flat projection, which serves as a spoon or spatula to conveniently scoop out the salt without having to use an additional tool. There is also a projected notch provided on one side of the lid assisting in keeping it at the place or easily opening up so that the insides remain protected from moisture and insects. The bamboo, being intrinsically segmented, with several nodes of hollow sections, enables smooth operation as far as accessing the container’s insides is concerned. It further proves the fact that the Khiamniungan are environmentally sustainable in their use of resources and their extremely high standards of skill. Each container was hand made for practical purposes with principles of functionality, knowing behavior of materials. Currently, they have found their place in the museum like the Indian Museum, Kolkata, serving them as exhibits representing the cultural heritage and affording glimpses into the most frugal lifestyle and material culture of the Khiamniungan Naga
