Pata is a culturally important bangle for the Binjhal women; a tribe that has historically purposed in Odisha and small parts of Chhattisgarh. Brightly clad and ornamented in symbols, the Binjhals reflect the aesthetics to sound into their jewellery; for instance, the Pata is a bend of a flat strip into a circle fit to the wrist. This ornament has the musical and ornamental twist: a twisted jute string from which hang six small brass jingles and four cowrie shells. These lend the ornament itself a well-developed aesthetic to the subtle ringing sound that it makes with movement, adding rhythmic beauty when dancing at festivities.
Cowrie shells were used as a medium of exchange and were revered by many tribal cultures for their symbolism; they are thought to represent wealth and fertility but also serve as protective agents. The brass jingles articulate the tribe's obsession with noise and movement, enacting soft but potent auditory performances during ritual and public events. The Pata is commonly worn in festivals, folk performances, and marriage functions, where the resounding reverberation and sparkle of the ornament produce a festive mood. It is a bangle which very obviously shows how the practicality, significance, and aesthetics of the Binjhal community are reflected in their traditional attire.
