short description
Culturally, this traditional Katri is nothing more than a brass kind of bangle worn by women of the indigenous Binjhal community- here in our case, the circuitry would generally include the states of Odisha and Chhattisgarh. These people have very deep customs, traditions, and the way of adorning the body with the help of hand made ornaments is different from other cultures. Culturally, the Binjhal people express themselves through crafts made Katris in their own styles. Although it is circularly shaped, the Katri is made of brass. A metal known not only for its durability but also for its cultural significance is brass. The inner surface of this bangle is generally flat and smooth; hence it appears very simple yet elegant. Unlike a katri, which is less ornate, the katri stresses purity and form, and this speaks of the aesthetic sense of the Binjhal people- where beauty resides in proportion, balance, and craftsmanship.

More often, the Katri is worn with two or more and supplemented with bangles either made in pure white metal or glass to complete the look. Usually, these bangles used to be worn at home as well as during festivals, rituals, and community celebrations, and these bangles create a connection between the feminine body and social identity, as well as cultural pride. These ornaments, like Katri, are made and adorned, thereby passing on the legacy of traditional knowledge and keeping alive the cultural heritage of the Binjhal tribe in a world that is moving ever closer toward modernization.
