short description
The Stag Figure is an outstanding example of tribal metallic craft from the state of Odisha, India, said to have been created by the Gunsur Malias tribe. This brass sculpture is a part of traditional figures made according to ancient lost-wax techniques, which are quite diverse in what they accomplish, all practiced by ancient tribal artisans. This figure of a stag, shown in a standing manner, depicts branched horns as a hallmark feature to add more realism and beauty to the piece. Square patterns scatter over the body of this stag, which apart from the sensibility adds to the nature-relation and symbolism of the tribe. The hind limbs of the stag are slightly shorter than its forelimbs, making the figure dynamic as if leaning forward to give an impression of alertness or movement. The tail, slightly developed, is short and modestly molded to aid in anatomical balance and realism.

Brass has been utilized for its durability and malleability, allowing detailing in all forms designed. It is a very large, very slow-moving bird that makes weak flying attempts, but it is a figure of strength and grace, as these are sometimes found by Adiya, in their ceremonial or decorative use. Such crafts preserve the distinct cultural identity of the tribe but make rich heritage into the tradition of tribal art of the state of Odisha.
