short description
The bamboo-strip woven baskets constitute the traditional craft of the Mikir (Karbi) in some other indigenous communities in northeastern India, predominantly found in Assam. The very existence of the Karbi community is marked by enormously diverse cultural traditions and an intrinsic connection with nature. The Karbi would use to find any available utility in any material, especially bamboo, to make something useful or for decoration. This is a circularly-shaped basket, woven from lighter but sturdy materials like split bamboo strips, which serves a day-to-day purpose for carrying and storing items. Because of its broad opening, a variety of things such as food, grains, and even ritualistic items, may be stored or carried inside. The elaborate rim is woven in interesting patterns and styles from strips of bamboo, showcasing not only the skills of the artisans from Karbi and their ability to make the basket undoubtfully aesthetic.

Another aspect of the basket that stands out is its base, which has been provided with a round plaited-design pedestal hence, giving it a decorative look but also to keep the basket properly steady when it is in use, preventing it from toppling over.
These decorative plaited bamboo designs are meant to enhance the aesthetic quality as well as display traditional weaving techniques of the tribe. The woven bamboo basket is the most significant part of everyday life for the Mikir (Karbi) tribes. It is used for carrying items or storing foods and is also employed in cultural fairs and rituals. This craft is one among the many livelihoods of the tribe that have been passed down from one generation to the other.
