description
This round bamboo basket is an ancient trade of the Gadaba tribe who primarily inhabit the hills of Odisha. The basket reflects the various skill sets that generations of the Gadabas have acquired and perfected in bamboo making through the cultural tradition.
The whole body of the basket literally holds within itself one of the best skills in bamboo making, with a straight focus on durability and strength. It goes onto display the goodness of utilizing a natural resource and transforming it into an entity of strength and beauty whereby the bamboo strips used for the weft are finely flattened. The shape may have several functional uses, and it also demonstrates the cultural importance of bamboo weaving as an existence for them.
With regard to the Gadaba tribes, this bamboo basket occupies an important place in their routine, used for one or more domestic purposes, the storing of grains, the carrying of agricultural products, or of forest collection items. Incredibly light and dependable, it merrily accompanies household chores and fieldwork. Traditionally, knowledge relating to weaving these baskets passes among the elders of the community, among whom women are found in large numbers. Women are the chief contributors to the conservation and transmission of their cultural practices. Since bamboo is abundantly found in their surroundings, that translates to a sustainable contract that would not harm the very institution of their age-old customs.
