short description
Iron dao is a traditional and practically oriented working tool of the Naga tribe, which is one of the prominent indigenous ethnic groups that occupy the hilly regions of Nagaland in Northeast India. The dao is more than just an iron blade because, to the Naga people, it is a synthesis of craftsmanship, utility, and cultural identity. Traditionally, these simple tools have been entrusted to men and women alike for the purpose of the daily labor process or a ritual one. In respect of this particular dao, it has a broad iron blade, wider at the upper part and gradually tapering down to the handle. Rectangular in general outline but with a slight inward curve to the sharpened edge, it is quite effective for chopping and slicing.

This design is especially applicable for agriculture, which includes clearing of underbrush and chopping of wood, but it may also serve as a weapon for purposes of defense. The cylindrical wooden handle creates a strong grip and averts harmonizing during operational use. Through an iron ferrule, the lower part of the blade is mounted in the handle to ensure structural integrity and wear resistance at the joint. Notably, an iron screw fixes the blade into the lower end of the handle. This feature is quite significant; it shows the natural evolution of traditional Naga weaponry-the incorporation of fastening practice. It is a true genius-the dao, defined by the spirit of ecology, aesthetics, judgment, and insight of the Naga tribe-in between functionality and durability as well as tribal artistry.
