short description
Essentially, the rich culture, weave, craft heritage, and sustainable way of life of the Angami Naga tribe living in Kohima district of Nagaland among other such wooden objects are made both for utility and ceremonial purposes. This shallow wooden dish is of great use to the Angami Naga because it has social-cum-religious value. This shallow wooden dish is round in shape having hardly an inch or two of depth. It is meant for serving dry or semi-solid food like meat, vegetables, or grains. Being shallow, food becomes very handy, especially during times of communal eating or feasting- making the deepest core of Angami social and ritual life. Usually carved from a single block of hard timber, the dish is a tribute to the expert knowledge of local materials and craftsmanship in wood carving of the Angami people.

Uses of the shallow wooden dish range from festival gatherings in the family to ritual offerings-it embodies the common community values and hospitality. A simple yet classy design is in tune with the qualities of minimalism, balance, and craftsmanship, which the tribe imposes in constructing their aesthetics. These dishes are often passed down the generations as a major traditional item in an Angami household. Such dishes have shown that the Angami did not abandon traditional practices while being firmly rooted in their environment and heritage.
