short description
The Burki is a wooden traditional utensil made by the Rabha tribe and is different in that it is shaped like a gourd. This still reflects a trend in the community toward developing functional objects in imitation of forms found in nature. And even though it is made like a gourd ladle, yet it is carving solid from one piece of wood: this applies the well-known skill of wood carving that the tribe develops. The Burki utensil consists of a roundish body which very probably serves as a small chamber for liquid storage, an elongated tapering tube protruding from it with an opening at its tip. This end as spout-like constitutes a utility of the Burki as the key implement whenever pouring fine grains or liquids that require precision. The functional design probably suggests its use either during ritual performances, cooking, and household-based storage and handling of liquids like oil, herbal preparations, or even water.

Emphasizing the harmonious relationship between the Rabha people with the environment, the use of natural forms and sustainable materials has also imbued those objects-cum-activities with their everydayness. The Burki, with its plain structure, combines the tribal demesne in aesthetic and pragmatic values, both organic designs and human functionality.
