short description
It is from this bamboo vessel-the cylindrical container of the Khampti people around Assam, India, known for their fine bamboo-cane work-that one can faithfully appreciate theural craftsmanship of the group. A hollow bamboo tube forms a single piece of this vessel, fitted with a lid at its top for closure just in case it should be used for something smaller, such as herbs and spices and even sacred offerings. It is the braiding of cane that still betters this vessel: it is a very fine wrapping around the upper lid area and around the lower part of the entire container, wherein artistic value is added to the whole unit. Such cane plaits might even give structural strength as well as act like non-suming grips over-the-head. Carved at the uppermost area are almost similar cane designs with the added purpose of being decorative and holding the dual strap or cane strap as received handles. These straps are quite cleverly tucked in on the opposite ends under the lower plaited band. Good example of design and utility working seamlessly.

Excellent examples of nature, bamboo, and cane are sustainable living of Khamti people and very close to their indigenous flora. Light, functional, yet robust vessels, suitable for both domestic and ritual places; the embodiment of eco-conscious lifestyles and artistic heritage of the tribe. This bamboo vessel, now housed in the Indian Museum, Kolkata, is a cultural artifact as much as a utility object because it conveys tribal identity and traditional knowledge of the Khampti people.
