description
Khampti bowls are simple clay bowls that are very elegant. Earthenware bowls are circular and very simple, with a slight rise on the base. The raised base signifies the tribes' ancient connection with the earth and its natural resources.
The Khampti earthen bowl presents very deep roots in tradition because the potters of the Khampti swear by functionality in harmony with nature. Made from local clay, the Khampti bowl takes on added character with its rounded nature contrasting with a distinctive raised base, which stabilizes the bowl firmly and in a manner that affords insulation against hot food or liquids. Though minimally decorated, both the clean geometry and earthy texture illustrate the ethos of Khampti's utilitarian wares.
In domestic life, bowls might have served all kinds of purposes: to hold cooked rice, soup, or offerings during ceremonial rites. Since Khampti tribespeople follow Theravada Buddhism, this type of earthenware often finds uses in both domestic and ceremonial affairs.
It was found in Assam, and today this particular artifact is part of the collection at the Indian Museum, Kolkata and has historical and cultural significance. Preservation of such items gives greater insight into tribal lifestyles, their skills, and the sustainable use of natural materials.
