A bamboo basket is a traditional utility object made by the Angami Naga tribe of Nagaland. Angami people are therefore the best of weavers which can make objects having both utilitarian purposes and yet being strong in designs due to good manipulation of this bamboo- this material being very hearty and versatile. The circular basket has three thick strips of bamboo around its rim to reinforce the design to be more strong and stable.
The sides of the basket are formed into shape and made with bamboo-made strips crossed across each other through the hallmark method of Naga basketry that ensures strength and flexibility. The flat base that is circular therefore helps it remain stationary on the ground for various purposes such as carrying and storing grains, vegetables, or other household items.
These types of baskets have far more important connotations than just being utility objects in the household. The baskets enter profoundly into the Angami tribe's everyday living and cultural practices. The objects bear testimony to work aesthetics that value use and are passed down through the generations. Housed in the Indian Museum, Kolkata, this object becomes an example of the traditional knowledge system and ecological wisdom of the tribe, where sustainability, skills, and community intersperse with every weave.
