short description
The Rabha tribe, an indigenous community living in parts of Assam considers the Fey an arrow of great importance. The forest-based lifestyle of the Rabha tribe and their immense knowledge of ecology have given them the practical ingenuity to create an array of hunting tools from the natural resources sustainably at their disposal. The Fey is one such tool of great significance to Rabha traditional hunting practices and cultural heritage. The arrow has a long, narrow shaft of bamboo, a material characterized by lightness and strength and available in huge numbers in the area. A bamboo shaft provides speed, straight flight, and durability. Fey boasts a pointed iron arrowhead, fixed neatly into the shaft by tang insertion method. The tang, that is, the extended base of the arrowhead, is driven into the bamboo shaft to give a strong, stable hold, thus making it indispensable in accurate and effective hunting. Also, from the back end, feathers of sorts have been tied to stabilize the arrow during flight to help it in directional and balanced kills. To accommodate the arrow when being released, a small notch has been carved into the arrow at the rear so it can rest on the string of the bow. The Fey is used for hunting mainly small game and birds and symbolizes a culture signifying self-reliance for the Rabha community and its diffusion of traditional knowledge through generations.
