short description
The Rabha tribe of Assam has primarily used the load carrier as a means to connect with the bamboo craftsmanship culture and functional indigenous design. Most of the time, this tool is employed in rural areas and forests attesting to the tribe's self-sufficient life and ecological sustainability of the utilized raw materials. The Rabha load carrier consists of two significant parts: a flat strip made of bamboo and two twisted jute ropes. The bamboo strip serves as a base or support platform and is deliberately formed wider in the center for better weight distribution and narrower toward both ends. A slight projection has been made at either end to keep the load from slipping. The jute ropes attached to both ends of the strip serve as the supporting bands that can be comfortably slung either across the head or over the shoulder, depending on the type of items being carried and the amount of weight on the carrier

This load carrier is most effective for transporting agricultural produce, firewood, or forest products through uneven terrain. It is light and ergonomic to carry for long distances on foot, which is a big necessity in the hilly and far-off places the Rabha people inhabit. The use of materials such as bamboo and jute that are both natural and locally available reinforces not only the ecological sensitivity of the Rabha community but also their traditional knowledge in working with materials to create objects of utility while minimizing adverse environmental impacts.
