The use of indigenous knowledge, traditions, and close understanding of local fauna in Rabha hunting demonstrates its authenticity. Unique to this trap net for porcupines are its bamboo and jute rope, which abound in the area, while preservation is now being undertaken at the Indian Museum in Kolkata. The hunting net has two components: the first is a circular bamboo loop, and the second a jute net made of knots. The bamboo ring served here as a firm structural framework to give flexible yet durable support. The jute net is attached at one end to this bamboo circle, whereas at the other end, the mesh is tightly knotted, permitting the capture of small to medium animals such as porcupines.
The net is baited along the path or burrow entrance travelled by the animal to forage. When the animal enters the netting, or just lightly touches the net, it collapses upon it—the prey is retrieved by the hunter with no forceful methods of killing. Thus, hunting with the use of this net seems very humane and eco-friendly. These practices must have evolved from the Rabha harmoniously relating with nature and respecting all forms of life. The Rabhas have gained a name for their depth of knowledge about the forest and craftsmanship, and this hunting net stands as evidence for their sustainable lifestyle and cultural inventions.
