short description
Locally in Assam, the old and indigenous way of weighing grains in the Rabha tribe stands as evidence in this rich and ethnographic document. It centers on an aspect of bamboo crafting and eco-sustainable design. The implement is based entirely on ancient grains and crop yields and perfectly indigenous in terms of practicality, skill, and cultures. It has two parts: one is like a circular flat dish with very tightly braided strands of split bamboo, the other is the long wooden handle. Tight weaving provides the measure with the strength and ability to hold a unchanging volume of stuff. The dish is tied with twisted jute ropes, tied at four evenly spaced points on the dish. These emerge and securely tie together to one end of the wooden handle, making a very secure but very balancing suspension system for the dish while using it.

Apart from the main jute rope, another a little thinner and twisted jute rope ends with two exposed ends attached to the handle looks like it might be used for carrying or adjusting, or perhaps even as a hanging point when the device's not in use. This very neatly engineered object is a testimony already of the Rabha's understanding of the materials at hand in their environment and also of their aptitude for very functional everyday objects built from those materials.House now made in the Indian museum, Kolkata, this bamboo weight measure remains agricultural equipped but also is a strong testimony to the sustainable nutritional pattern and artisanal heritage of the Rabha tribe itself.
