It is a classical piece of traditional craftsmanship having been adapted to serve during heavy monsoons of Meghalaya for the rain shield of the Khasi tribe. Its oval form makes it especially suitable for using with split bamboo which is abundant in hilly terrains of Meghalaya. Underneath the two woven bamboo layers, leaves are placed to act as additional insulation from the water and also serve as a natural waterproofing agent.The rim of the shield is made out of strong bamboo strips, provide rigidity as well as a measure of flex on the shield. A thick woven band shearlapping edges encircles the outside edge of the shield to bind the two layers, giving further reinforcement for durability of the shield. This is a very big traditional rain shield that protects the upper body, which is usually placed over the head or strapped on during travel, working on the farm, or doing outdoor work.
