Traditionally, gourd pots like this one were used for storing and serving water, fermented rice beer (bitchi), and herbal concoctions. It is also perfect for preparation and mixing since the wide diameter allows easy access. The plant's inherent heat insulation property is the main thing making it worthy of use in this humid region: it keeps the temperature of the contents constant. This pot becomes a further echo of the intimacy between the Garo and their native nature while standing as an equally grand statement of sustainable living and indigenous knowledge systems. Craftsmanship continued through generations keeps these pots as functional implements and cultural heirlooms.
