Gourd shell vessel The gourd shell vessel is an indigenous unique useful source storage container, which is used by the Adi tribe, a north eastern indigenous community in India, Arunachal Pradesh. These people are traditionally very rich in cultural heritage and close to nature, using the harness of local resources in imaginative patterns. This particular gourd vessel defines the fantastic craftsmanship and usefulness of the Adi people.
This gourd vessel is hollowed out completely into a gourd internally and works as a body of the container. There is also a bamboo frame clothed around it that supplies the container with structural integrity as well as protection in addition to its durability. Two outer bark fibre handles are connected with the vessel, which helps in handling and transporting it. The bark fiber, skillfully extracted and woven, has been a tradition for generations. The handles fulfill their utility but also give a pleasing, natural appearance to the vessel. This gourd shell vessel mainly serves the purpose of storing rice beer, the traditional alcoholic drink made from fermented rice. The rice beer is culturally significant within the Adi tribe as it is usually enjoyed during festivities, rituals, and social gatherings. The design of the vessel ensures that the beer is kept safely and easily accessible during ceremonial events or even daily consumption. This gourd shell vessel is not a mere tool; it symbolizes the very critical relationship of the Adi tribe with the outside world and sustainable use of resources. It symbolizes their traditional knowledge that has been passed down through generations and continues to remain relevant because it still forms an integral part of their identity.
