short description
The Angami Naga pipe has attained the status of being almost an art object, showcasing the local craftsmanship, in that this pipe has been rendered from a single piece of wood. This handmade pipe consists of a wooden bowl and a wooden pipe, functioning as a single entity. A wonderful aspect of this artifact is an engraving of a human face on the outside surface of the bowl; it symbolizes either ancestral reverence, tribal identity, or spiritual beliefs. Additionally, fourteen small vertical beams support a bar placed horizontally, all beautifully carved out of one solid piece of wood. A plaited cane strap is tightly wound around an open mouth of the pipe, finishing it off nicely and giving it great strength.

description
Any tobacco ceremonies of the Angami in Nagaland are old, elaborate, and distinguished. Especially among the elders and tribal leaders, tobacco consumption among the Angami Naga constitutes an inherited belief. Smoking pipes such as these were symbols not just of convenience but very often of position, wisdom, and heritage. The carvings are a narrative of the folklore, warrior traditions, and artistic excellence of the Angami Naga people.
The use of the pipe during gatherings for entertainment, storytelling, and religious ceremonies marks the activities as inseparable from the tribe’s cultural practices. Eco-friendly use of locally available wood and cane enhances their relationship with nature. As an historical and artistic artifact, this has provided sustenance for the tribe's legacy over many generations.
