short description
The Woven Grass Basket is a man-made minor utility which has come into being because of the Santhal tribes, perhaps the largest tribal community of India primarily settled in the states of Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, and Bihar. This is believed to be a culture with deep traditions that live in harmony with nature, and they have lived for centuries by using materials like grass, bamboo, and wood for making their tools and containers for daily use. This basket is small, and it is something like a bowl made by splitting grasses with utmost care and precision. The Santhal craftsmen apply a simple but durable weaving pattern so that this basket can cover small items within it. The natural texture and pliability of the grasses make it least weighty and also makes it a very pleasing material to work with for making containers in an eco-friendly way.

The basket serves all possible purposes in most Santhal households. In particular, it is a storehouse for women to keep grains, seeds, fruits, or small household things. Additionally, it conveniently holds flowers or other things for rituals or festivals when required of them. The design is very simple, but it shows the typical capacity of the tribe toward craftsmanship and also respect toward living in nature. The baskets, in general, are handcrafted and mostly inherited from generation to generation. The weaving is considered to be an important activity of women. Symbolizing self-sufficiency, art, and reverence for nature prevalent among the Santhal tribe, it is a simple yet very important item in life.
