short description
This indigenous Mizo community hails from the northeastern part of India, where it is beautifully set in the lush landscape of the state called Mizoram. Almost all cultural practices of the community find their expression in the different handcrafted items made by its people for daily use. One such item is the smoking pipe, which has significance attached to it in both social and cultural rituals. The Mizo smoking pipe has a wooden, bowl-in-the-head chamber for smoking, where the tobacco or other substance to be smoked is placed. The making of this bowl is done with utmost care; generally, it is carved from thick, readily available wood found within the territory. A reed has been inserted through the first one of these into the body of the bowl, through which smoke will be drawn. This reed has been chosen with care for its flexibility so that the pipe functions very well in smoking.

This reed has been chosen with care for its flexibility so that the pipe functions very well in smoking.
The smoking pipe is primarily possessed by the males of the Mizo tribe. The smoke-topped tradition is very important for the social meet of the Mizo people, where usually the pipe is blown among friends when they relax, narrate stories, or have discussions. Also, in ceremonies and traditions, it is regarded as an important tool used as a standard of hospitality and serves to bond people together.

The smoking pipe of the Mizo people represents an important cultural object rather than just an implement of function. The design and use of this tool will show how resourceful the tribe it stands for really is, because it has brought together natural materials into a practical configuration, wood and reed, and so made a tool that is tied deeply in the social practices of the Mizo. To sum up, the smoking pipe of the Mizo tribe takes smoking to another level; it is more than a mere object to smoke with. It is an emblem of the culture, craftsmanship, and social life of the Mizo people.
