short description
The Phopo is an exquisitely made wooden cup that is usually utilized by people of the Bhutia tribe in Sikkim. The cup is simple and practical in its making and takes the shape of a circular base with a holistically raised pedestal, helping it stands on a flat surface. Both the inside and the outer part of the cup are painted in red, which is usually regarded as an auspicious color and life in a vital sense with the Himalayan cultures. Such a vessel is indeed very utilitarian and is testimony to the aesthetic sensibility of the Bhutia people steep-imbricated into natural materials put to everyday uses. The smooth texture of the wood, coupling with the warm color of red paint, connotes that this cup could have been used to serve drinks on domestic or ceremonial occasions. In keeping with this, the red color itself may bear a ritual significance, which is otherwise found especially in any religious or festive object of a Tibet-Buddhist influenced community such as the Bhutias. The dish is the technique for the people to fuse functional utility with a cultural expression, be it using it for daily meals or sacred offerings.
