short description
The Mizo loin loom, a precious traditional weaving tool of the Mizo ethnic group of Mizoram, is an archetype of the community's textile heritage and artisanal talent. This particular loom consists of six pieces of bamboo, eight pieces of wood, and a leather strap, where functionalism is concerned with a very intricate hand-weaving technique. The components include a narrow wooden piece wound with yellow thread at the end, which is used for applying thread tension. Another wooden piece, having a serrated margin, is used for separating and arranging the yarn threads during weaving.

Among the bamboo pieces, one is closed at one end and slanted at the other, while another is flat, thick, and tapering, exhibiting adjustable designs for comfort in usage. The loin loom is mainly used by Mizo women. They sit on the floor, with the loin loom strapped around their waist, for weaving. The portable and efficient design enables these women to weave their traditional textiles with consummate skill and precision, such as paunchier. They do not remember a loom, neither as a tool nor a means, but as an identity, as a tradition, and as a way of sustenance. Preserving and popularizing these indigenous tools lends support to the heritage weaving traditions of Mizoram while creating bonds within communities and empowering rural artisans.
