short description
The Agaria community dwells in the Dindori and Balaghat territories of Mandla, Madhya Pradesh, primarily known for its dexterity in iron smelting. More significantly, they are marked as a community, which is "born of fire", signifying their mythical antiquity with metalwork. Once, according to folklore, the Agarias ruled Loharipur, an imaginary city of iron ruled by twelve Agaria brothers, who according to their belief, are their ancestry. However, their rule was lost to Surya-the Vedic god of the sun, which resulted in an end to their empire. It is since then that the Agarias have been described as nomadic, devoid of a real home; The practice of iron smelting embraced by the Agarias is now nearly on the verge of extinction due to rapid modernization changes to traditional existing forms of life. Once thriving, their culture is now under pressure for change and with it the risk of centuries-old craftsmanship. The biggest congregation of the Agaria community takes place at the Dagona, Mandla site during Shivratri fair, where different tribal communities come together to showcase the remaining traditions and heritage before it vanishes completely.
