Handi Chala is an old bamboo basket that has been traditionally made in a manner where it is handcrafted from cut-and-split sections of bamboo. As peculiar to it, the shape of this basket employs a combination of a circular rim and a triangular base. The unusual combination of shapes represents the innovation of the Santhal people in basket-making and the harmonious blending of utility and artistic dream. Handi Chalas are weaved with two different techniques. While the sidewalls are made with the mat-weaving technique, the base is tightly woven with compact weaving for durability. Long bamboo strips are used to reinforce the rim, further tightened to ensure the long-standing shape of the basket.
