The largest tribal community in India, the Santhal people mainly occupy the regions of Jharkhand and are known for their colorful culture, agricultural life and incredible bamboo craftsmanship. Among the many things they make by hand and use in their own homes, Theka is a very simple yet very functional bamboo basket, used in everyday domestic life.
The shape is round, the fine split bamboo strips are woven to make this basket. It has round openings with matching round base for design consideration, making it quite aesthetic as well as practical in use. By the tight weaving technique used in making-theka, it becomes tough and durable and can withstand and can withstand holding and carrying of grains, vegetables, fruits, and other household items.
Its construction showcases the mastery of the Santhal community over the craft of bamboo weaving, which has been passed from generation to generation. The use of available bamboo makes the basket not only sustainable but also quite affordable and close to rural life. Its appearance certainly seems to be very simple, but the weaving reflects precision that is usually a result of deep understanding regarding material, structure, and the daily requirement of life.
The Theka does not merely become an object of utility, but a relic of the Santhal people's eco sustainable existence, artistic skill, and their affinity with the natural world.
