Wooden Bolt of santhal tribe
description
It is the current Santhal tribe that has the most populous members amongst all the prominent tribals of eastern India. Jharkhand is the state that most clearly stand among themselves for oral traditions, music, and craftsmanship of the tribe. One of the hunting weapons they have is called Tuti: a wooden bolt that shows the practical ingenuity of the tribe mani with deep rootedness in territory of the forest environment.
Tuti is a projectile made of wood with a head and a bamboo shaft as the two major parts. The head being in a hexagonal shape is considerable in terms of the property geometry it offers for balance as well as impact during flight, while straight and light as well as strong is the bamboo shaft. There's a notch carved at the lower end of the shaft; that would serve to fix the bolt to a bow or crossbow-like launcher, which most probably is a design among the traditional Santhal hunting tools.
It is common to use the Tuti mainly for hunting small game. This exhibits the use of sustainable sources of natural resources by the Santhals in the preparation of tools from hardwood and bamboo as adaptations of their forested environment. Such traditional weapons have been overtaken by modernity; still, they remain representative of the tribes' heritage, found in museums and tribal cultural centers.
