Goa is famous for its unique handwoven Kunbi cloth, generally used to make vibrant sarees. The saree has the Kunbi tribe, one of the oldest tribes in Goa, as the name would suggest; the style is created using a distinctive checkered-like pattern with mostly red- and red-adjacent colors.

Traditionally, Kunbi women, who cultivated agriculture in paddy fields, used to wear the saree in a functional, movement-friendly way every day, which was below their knees. In fact, the term kunbi itself comes from "kun" (family) and "bi" (seed), which refers to the familial bond that continues to be preserved over generations referred to weaving. The Kunbi saree has evolved in style and color over a period of time. 

Traditionally, the saree was not adorned with a blouse, but rather, it was wrapped casually around the waist and knotted on the right shoulder in a draping fashion referred to as "dethli," literally meaning knotted. Modern Kunbi women have turned to wearing the saree fully with blouses. Beyond sarees, Kunbi weaving is used for loincloths, handkerchiefs, and gamchas (cotton towels), although the original weave has experienced declining popularity in recent decades.
