short description
The peahen represented in this humble metal sculpture is an exemplar of the artistic magnificence and the spiritual communion of the Khond tribe with nature. The Khond people, who live in the eastern fringes of India, particularly Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, practice art forms characterized by very fine detail, inspired by nature, and the worship systems of animism. All the traits of that bird- grace, beauty, and balance of nature- are held very dearly by the Khonds. The peahen is sculpted with minimal sophistication, symbolized by two projections to either side for wings.

This manifests and emphasizes the fragile femininity of the peahen alongside its very strong avatar of fertility. The peahen as the companion to the male peacock symbolizes harmony and partnership in Khond lore. Though the wings appear abstracted, the form might signify the protectiveness of the bird, adding to its spiritual significance. A metal sculpture reflecting the cast of Khond people and their skills in conventional metalwork, passed on generation to generation. The dexterous rendering of the peahen indicates their respect for the animal kingdom, and the artistic ability to transfer nature into sacred mediums of expression captures the essence of their traditions.
