description
Being very much Ayurvedic in their lifestyles, the Gadaba tribe has developed their settlements in highlands and forests of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. The tribe takes pride in its relationship with nature and proficient transport of bamboo. One of the products among other house-hold crafted utility items of theirs is the Churki bamboo basket. It is an example of classical design blended with utilitarian functionality. It is made of flat bamboo splits carefully processed and woven to a stout and flexible structure. Initial access is provided by the circular opening at the top end, while the base has a squarish form with four prominent corners. A shape variation adds to visual appeal along with balance and steadiness when placed on disturbed surfaces.
Both parts of this Churki—inner and outer—are intricately woven with flat bamboo strips in two distinctly different colors: yellow and black. The admirable aesthetics brought forth by the color contrast reflect the fact that the Gadaba really loved bright yet natural designs. These colors are generally obtained from natural dyes or treated bamboo, thus demonstrating sustainability through generations.
Carried Churki to supply the grain or vegetable from the field. It is all-purpose in rural usage in its strong yet light weight. The main function of this basket is carrying crops from the farm; however, it is not just any implement but it is representative of the Gadaba ancestry's time-tested craftsmanship and relationship with the environment where they dwell.
