The Bamboo Basket is an obligatory utility item hand-weaved by the Mishmi tribe of the Arunachal Pradesh region. Using the fine technique of basket-making, this traditional basket is modeled to carry sundry items and is hence provided with a cane strap to carry it with ease on the back, or slung over the shoulder.
The Mishmis are famous for their grafting of weaving skills, a skill that is passed down through generations by locals for making these baskets with bamboo and cane found in the area. The bamboo strips preferred for weaving are flexible yet strong, and the interlaces are perfected to make a durable and lightweight structure. It adds strength to the cane strap so that it could bear the weight of collected items.
These baskets are also being used for various purposes, from storing agricultural produce and household items to actually carrying out hunting and gathering from the forest. The Bamboo Basket has a special social role for the Mishmi people. The very patterns and designs incorporate the rich traditions of the tribe, with distinct motifs identifying various clans or subgroups. Traditionally used in daily life by Mishmi craftsmen, these baskets are now being marketed as being ecofriendly and beautifying, qualifying them as handcrafted tribal artifacts.
With increasing awareness for sustainable crafts, Mishmi Bamboos Basket sustains an emblem of indigenous craftsmanship that fosters a time-honored tradition and sustains even the full-time livelihood of local artisans.
