short description
The Leopard Skin Bag is a traditional fur bag made from leopard skin made in Arunachal Pradesh, India. This is a beautifully shaped rectangular bag with one compartment inside with a leather sling to carry it. It is a modern messenger bag though it used to be used by the Apatani tribes, whose people are hill dwellers with a deep love for nature and traditional craftsmanship.
This bag was believed to be once used, highly valued fur, which Apatani men often carried to hunting expeditions, traveling, or on some tribal occasions. Although today the Apatani are also resourceful in using other natural materials, the inclusion of leopard hide is a reflection of this nature by using it for their purpose. Now, however, ethical considerations and wildlife conservation laws prohibit this.
The utility of the bag goes far beyond the functional application; it also has cultural value signifying part of the Apatani tradition and craft. Strong and good looking, it is a practical accessory as well as an artifact of tribal tradition. The Leopard Skin Bag is being produced in modern times with the same legacy as that of Apatani craftsmanship by artisans, because it is made using all sustainable materials.
It is an apparition of the modern messenger bag but for long it has been used by the Apatani tribe, a hill dwelling tribe that has a culture extremely close to nature along with traditional craftsmanship. It was believed to have been carried by Apatani men in hunting expeditions, journeys, or during important tribal gatherings, symbolizing high status.
The use of leopard hide denoted how Apatani people have been resourceful in harvesting nature's materials; nowadays, ethical considerations and wildlife conservation laws have steered away from such use. More than just being really functional, the bag is culturally important since it represents the heritage and works of the Apatani culture as well. Strong and good looking, it shines as an accessory for use as well as an artifact of tribal culture. Resurrected into modern times, the Leopard Skin Bag is still being manufactured by artisans, keeping with the principle of Apatani craftsmanship, while using all sustainable materials.
